It is just toward finish this starts to break down, although slap-up finale rescues they on the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero great problem when you look at the life style down its incredibly unsightly identity.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Movie Bulletin told you “The movie moves during the an easy rate, the conversation was smooth and you can characterisations essentially productive. The brand new film’s publisher and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a beneficial multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal bet, between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) has worked within gambling establishment and dated a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Cobb, once the a police inspector, and additionally within the rating . As the area observe a familiar trend, the latest characterizations are new as well as the performances sufficient to overbalance. Dialog was terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney contact. Strange camera angles arrive occasionally in order to heighten desire and you can briefly stop the interest. Solid teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling while the movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, unique copywriter and you can representative music producer, also helps with rendering it a flaccid manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

It is primarily a matter of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces smartly when you find yourself a huge throw off stars and performers offer your standard support. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable nothing lady just who brings about the fresh finest in your and you may Ellen Drew is the smooth and slinky vixen just who becomes your on jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy because the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do another able tour once the an exhausted cops inspector just who in the end closes the case. A great deal of taking and puffing is accomplished of the all concerned.” [ several ]
